AI in wealth management — lessons from winning a football prediction contest

What does a football prediction contest have to do with AI in wealth management? More than I expected.

I won our internal World Cup prediction contest at Alpinum Investment Management AG and MARCUARD HERITAGE. Admittedly, I waited three weeks to mention it, which I would like to call modesty.

Some context is in order. The field was strong. These are people for whom football is not a hobby but a household arrangement — weekends built around fixtures, children in academy set-ups, loyalties that stretch across three leagues and survive every relegation. In short, they know the game from the inside. I do not. My knowledge stops somewhere around FC Sion – Olympique des Alpes SA, and I have been known to ask why the goalkeeper wears a different shirt.

So I did what I now do with most questions I cannot answer on my own: I asked a machine to help me think. I will spare you the exact method — half the pleasure was in building it — but the short version is that artificial intelligence did the work my football memory could not.

What This Taught Me About AI in Wealth Management

Three weeks on, what stays with me is not the trophy. Instead, it is how familiar the pattern felt. AI in wealth management is starting to work in exactly the same quiet way. It does not replace the expert. Rather, it changes who ends up in front.

Three Lessons Beyond the Scoreboard

These lessons travel well beyond a prediction table. First, deep domain knowledge is still valuable, yet on its own it is no longer a lasting edge. Second, the advantage sits with people who pair good judgement with better tools and sharper questions. Third, waiting until the technology feels finished is also a decision — usually an expensive one, taken quietly at the back of the table.

To my runners-up: sincere respect. In a fair contest of football knowledge, you would have beaten me comfortably. The difference was not expertise. It was leverage.

Where have you seen a good tool outperform deep experience?
