Client Relations

The Loyalty Question

On this page

Client loyalty is one of the most valued assets in wealth management, yet I believe it is often misunderstood.

Sometimes I wonder whether our industry thinks about loyalty the wrong way around.

Banks, wealth managers and advisers naturally value loyal clients. Some relationships last for decades, and a few even survive across generations. However, loyalty is often discussed as if it were simply a result of assets under management.

I am not convinced that people decide in that way.

When someone begins their financial journey, the experience is usually highly standardised. Digital onboarding, online banking, automated messages and occasional product updates. This is efficient and entirely understandable. After all, not every client can receive personal attention from the very first day.

Loyalty Is Revealed, Not Created

The more interesting question concerns what happens later. Imagine someone who spends fifteen years building a business, investing steadily and slowly accumulating wealth. During those years, they may have had very little meaningful contact with their financial institution. Then a liquidity event occurs. A company is sold, or an inheritance is received. Suddenly, relationship managers appear and invitations arrive.

From a commercial perspective, the timing makes perfect sense. From a human perspective, however, it may feel rather different.

In reality, people often decide whom they trust long before they become financially attractive. Moreover, they remember who took the time to explain things when there was little commercial reason to do so. They also remember who was present before success arrived.

Therefore, loyalty is rarely created when wealth appears. Instead, wealth simply reveals where loyalty already existed.

Why Client Loyalty Starts Early

For this reason, the early years matter far more than they seem to. Because loyalty, once earned quietly, tends to last.
