Extrinsic motivation arises from external rewards – salary, benefits, or recognition through praise and promotions. These factors are powerful reasons for many of us to show up at work every day. However, as many have realised, these external motivators often have a limited shelf life.
A year can be a long stretch. Between annual reviews, countless challenges can emerge, some of which may seem Mission Impossible. Challenges sometimes pop up unexpectedly, random and fast, much like mushrooms after a rain.
That’s why I firmly believe in the power of intrinsic motivation – self-motivation. People often ask me what drives me. Hands-on learning has always been at the core of my inspiration. I spent my early years in the “Back Office” at Citibank, striving to understand every process.
Nowadays, when I feel I’m not learning something new in my job, I turn to interactive, gamified online courses on Coursera. This thirst to continually learn on a personal level keeps me motivated no matter what comes my way.
To all the client-exposed Relationship Managers out there – I’m convinced our learning journey never truly ends. As we age and spot our first grey hairs, we better navigate challenging situations, especially when clients demand the impossible. I always look forward to learning from seasoned Relationship Managers and understanding their perspectives.
