In independent Swiss wealth management, we often hear: “Next-gen Wealth. We need to go digital or die.” But on the ground, little is changing — especially at the high end of private banking. Why?
Today’s wealth is still primarily held by the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers. But even the next in line, Generation X, are not exactly digital pioneers. They might remember writing BASIC code on a Commodore 64, but that doesn’t make them tech-driven clients. They value relationships, personal access, brand loyalty — not AI dashboards or slick user interfaces.
Millennials? They’re more open. But in the HNWI and UHNWI segments, even Millennials often inherit habits before they inherit wealth. The fundamental shift will come with Generation Z — currently in their teens and twenties. They are the first true digital natives. They expect personalisation, transparency, and 24/7 access. But here’s the catch: they won’t inherit serious wealth before 2045–2050.
So while front-end tech in wealth management feels stuck, it’s not without reason. The typical client with CHF 20+ million isn’t looking for a chatbot.
They want discretion, clarity, and someone who picks up the phone — a trusted relationship.
Still, this is not a green light for inaction. The innovative firms are using this window to clean up their data, automate back-end processes, and modernise core systems. Because once the generational shift hits, you can’t afford to be ten years behind.
Fundamental next-gen digital transformation in high-end wealth management isn’t too late. It’s perfectly timed to the inheritance curve.
