Last week, I had the opportunity to visit my colleagues in Cyprus. What started as a straightforward business visit quickly turned into a deeper reflection on Cyprus Wealth Management—and on why this location deserves serious consideration from Swiss private bankers who are thinking a bit more long-term.
The true strength of Cyprus lies not only in its professional setup but also in how work and life fit together. The local Wealth Management ecosystem has matured noticeably. There is a solid financial infrastructure, precise regulation, and a growing presence of independent wealth managers with an international outlook. Significantly, professionalism is not sacrificed for lifestyle. Both coexist.
If I were a Relationship Manager, this model would resonate strongly with me. An independent wealth manager, robust governance, and genuine Swissness—combined with booking capabilities at Swiss banks. Clients retain their trusted Swiss banking relationships. At the same time, bankers gain more flexibility and entrepreneurial room. This sense of continuity becomes particularly valuable as priorities evolve over a career.
Wealth Management under the sun
Beyond the office, Cyprus convinces on a personal level. The island has real seasons, simply in a milder form. During my stay, temperatures were around 20°C during the day and cooler in the evenings. Summer does get hot—there is no need to romanticise that—but it is predictable, well supported by infrastructure, and balanced by long, pleasant spring, autumn, and winter periods.
Every day life is easy. English is widely spoken and sufficient for both business and social settings, removing a significant barrier to integration. Only driving on the “wrong” side of the road requires some adjustment—manageable, but memorable.
In addition, Cyprus offers attractive and well-structured tax conditions. With proper planning and professional advice, this can be a meaningful advantage while remaining fully compliant and reputable.
Cyprus is often portrayed too narrowly in public discourse. Smaller countries rarely control the narrative. Yet a closer look reveals a location with substance and growing relevance for Cyprus Wealth Management.
I returned to the dark, cold Switzerland, a “Fani Xenophontos backpack” richer. With a touch of longing for sun and warmth. And with the clear conviction that Cyprus is not just a place to work, but a place to live.
