Between a business trip and a panel discussion at the Wealth Management Summit 2026, there was little room for genuine reflection. Now, with some distance, one thought about succession planning stands out clearly.
The biggest challenge in wealth management is not technology, regulation, or competition.
It is us.
The Industry Has Grown Older
We have grown older as an industry. For years, we have helped clients with succession planning, structured generational wealth transfers, and long-term strategies. We advised with clarity and conviction. Yet, while doing all of this, many of us quietly postponed one uncomfortable question: our own succession.
Who actually takes over?
Why Continuity Turns Into A Structural Risk
As a result, this is becoming a structural risk. Independent wealth managers are built on trust, consistency and deeply personal relationships. That is our greatest strength — but also our most significant vulnerability. Consequently, when leadership continuity is unclear, that vulnerability becomes a business risk.
Meanwhile, we talk extensively about digitalisation, data interfaces and operational efficiency. Of course, all of it matters. But none of it addresses the core issue if leadership succession remains unresolved.
Growth Alone Does Not Solve The Question
Many firms present growth through acquisitions or partnerships as the solution. In reality, this often means similar profiles, age groups, and ways of thinking. In other words, that doesn’t solve succession planning; it delays it.
Succession Planning Is A Strategic Priority
Succession planning is not an operational task. Rather, this is a strategic priority and a matter of responsibility — towards clients, employees, and partners who depend on continuity and trust.
Perhaps the moment has arrived to shift perspective. Less advising clients on succession. More acting on it within our own firms.
Ultimately, the future of independent wealth management will not be decided by markets alone. It depends on whether we are willing to address what we already know.
