We base our review on a mixture of elements. An important ranking factor is the usual condition of the aircraft itself (40%), but also the served food (30%), the staff (30%) apart from a worldwide safety ranking. We are not much into the entertainment program and use mainly our Kindle Paperwhite or iPad (Netflix download).

Here are our top 5 airlines in the world, according to our experience.

1 Singapore Airlines

Singapore’s standout service makes for a famously pleasant journey during which flight attendants are trained to treat customers with extreme care and respect. The food quality is incredible, and the offered choice in business class (pre-order) is better than in many restaurants. The A380 with the new business class fitting is over the top and reclaimed the status of the best business class.

All-time Experience: More than 20 flights – economy class and business class.

All-time Destinations: Denpasar, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Zurich

2 Emirates

Emirates has developed into one of the world’s premier long-haul carriers. It has the largest fleet of our favourite aircraft the Airbus A380. Food is good, but after a while it gets repetitive. Nevertheless, the business class wine list is world-class — however, frequent flyer witness that their aircraft are heavy in use, especially the 777, and that a refurbishment is due to catch up with Singapore Airlines and Etihad.

3 Etihad

Just in the neighbourhood of Emirates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi is the base of the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates. The airline has become mainly famous for their residence flying apartments and business-class suites. Don’t worry, if you get booked on a backward flying business class seat – once you sit down – you don’t notice it anymore and enjoy the privacy of your little suite. Etihad ranks 3# after Emirates because of lack of Airbus A380 as well as our lack of experience compared to Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

All-time Less than five flights – economy class and business class

All-time Destinations: Abu Dhabi, Zurich

4 Austrian Airlines

We love the Austrian style, and their onboard service is the best of short-haul flights. From a passenger point of view, the inside of the aircraft is a tidy and clean as possible. It feels like being a passenger on a brand new jet.

All-time Experience: More than five flights – economy class and business class

All-time Destinations: Larnaca, Vienna, Zurich

5 Swiss

It is just not anymore Swissair. It feels like they could do better and advance to be again a premium airline company, but have to fit into the Lufthansa conglomerate. Sometimes you will experience excellent service, and on your next flight, you get disappointed again. Their sandwich for short-haul flights is disappointing compared to what you get when flying Austrian.

All-time Experience: More than 30 flights

All-time Destinations: Bangkok, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Larnaca, London, Luxembourg, Moscow, New York, Rome, Singapore, Vienna

We would love to experience ANA All Nippon Airways, Qatar and Thai Airways – maybe 2019?
