This piece on finding an independent wealth manager in Switzerland reflects personal views and is not investment advice.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my last piece<\/a>, I googled for an independent wealth manager in Switzerland. But a growing share of wealthy clients no longer start on Google. Instead, they ask an AI assistant. So I opened claude.ai, Anthropic’s chatbot, picked its most capable model, and asked twice. First, as a Swiss client would, in German:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in a fresh chat, as an English-speaking client would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same model, same morning, same question. Then I did what a client rarely does: I checked every name Claude gave me. Afterwards, I switch hats again and ask what persuades an AI to name a firm at all \u2014 and whether the ones it names actually offer what a good one adds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the impatient: the German client got Aquila, Marcuard Heritage, Alpen Partners, Bellecapital and Swisspartners. The English client got NS Partners, Marcuard Heritage, Woodman Asset Management, Tareno and Forum Finance Group. One name sits in both lists. One bank sits in the German list. Above all, Claude built the two answers in entirely different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Claude said first \u2014 in both languages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both answers opened the same way. There is no objective top five, Claude said; it is not a financial advisor; the list is an orientation, not advice. Both also ended with the same checklist. Confirm the FINMA-Bewilligung<\/a> in the public register. Keep the money at a custodian bank of your choice, so that the manager holds only a limited power of attorney. Ask what retrocessions the firm receives and refunds. Expect all-in costs of roughly 0.6% to 1.0% a year at this size. Finally, ask about succession, because most independent wealth managers in Switzerland are owner-run by people over 55. Both answers suggested asking three or four firms for a written proposal on the same briefing. In short, on the advice the two answers matched, and both beat most firms’ websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The names, however, did not match. The German answer offered “five established, large, FINMA-licensed independent wealth managers based in Zurich”. I never mentioned Zurich; Claude placed me there from my location. The English answer, which asked about Switzerland, offered “five large, established, FINMA-licensed firms that consistently appear in Citywire Switzerland’s annual Top 50 IAM ranking” \u2014 and ranged from Geneva to Basel to Zug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German list: five independent wealth managers in Zurich<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Aquila \u2014 a bank, not a wealth manager<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Aquila<\/a> dates from the turn of the millennium and has held a Swiss banking licence since 2012. It runs a custody and settlement bank and a service platform for independent wealth managers: more than 85 partner firms work under its roof. Claude described it correctly as the largest platform for independents in Switzerland. It even noted that a client “effectively picks a specific team within the group”. Then it listed Aquila anyway, in first place. Aquila is the infrastructure, not the manager, and it is a bank. So it is out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Marcuard Heritage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Marcuard Heritage<\/a> started in Zurich in 2003 and holds a FINMA licence as a portfolio manager. It employs around 70 people in Zurich, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Limassol. Together with its sister company Alpinum Investment Management, the group manages close to USD 6 billion, and it co-founded the Alliance of Swiss Wealth Managers. Claude’s description \u2014 a multi-family-office approach, strong in complex family wealth and estate planning \u2014 fits. It is also the only firm on both lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Alpen Partners<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Gabris founded Alpen Partners<\/a> in 2008 and still owns it. The firm holds a FINMA licence as a portfolio manager, a Canadian licence, and an SEC registration through a sister company. Its headquarters sit in Freienbach, canton Schwyz, with offices in Zurich, Geneva and Lugano. Two things went wrong here. First, Claude filed it under “based in Zurich”. Second, it described the firm as “connected with the private bank Rahn+Bodmer”. It is not. In fact, Alpen Partners hired Rahn+Bodmer’s long-serving head of portfolio management in October 2026. Claude turned a hire into a corporate link \u2014 and so attached a bank to a firm whose selling point is that it has none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Bellecapital<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Beat Bass, Werner Diehl and Mark Eberle founded Bellecapital<\/a> in 2009 and named it after its address at Zurich’s Bellevue. Today it employs around 60 people, manages about CHF 5 billion and has offices in Zurich, London, the Cayman Islands and Lausanne; an SEC-registered unit serves U.S. clients. Claude described it as a specialist in active, concentrated equity mandates. The founders have long said their product is performance. Whether “concentrated equity mandates” is the right label, however, the firm’s public material does not say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Swisspartners<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Three former bankers founded Swisspartners<\/a> in Zurich in 1993. Today it ranks among the larger independents in the country: around 100 staff, roughly CHF 5 to 6 billion in client assets, offices in Zurich, Rapperswil and Vaduz, Alliance membership, and trust and insurance services alongside wealth management. One footnote Claude did not mention: from 2005 to 2015, Liechtensteinische Landesbank held a majority of the firm, until it sold the stake back to the partners. “Independent” has a history here, so it is worth asking any firm about theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The English list: five independent wealth managers across Switzerland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. NS Partners<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

NS Partners<\/a>, formerly Notz Stucki, dates from 1964 and belongs to its management. It manages or administers more than CHF 13 billion across wealth management, asset management and a Luxembourg fund-management company, with over 110 staff in seven offices including Zurich. It holds a FINMA licence as a manager of collective assets and belongs to the Alliance. Claude’s figures \u2014 1964, around CHF 12 billion, 120 staff, seven offices \u2014 came close, and they came with a citation to the firm’s own site. For a client looking for an independent wealth manager in Switzerland, this is the oldest name on either list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Marcuard Heritage \u2014 with a mix-up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Same firm as above, this time with a citation to a finews article. But Claude wrote “Marcuard Heritage \/ Marcuard Family Office” as if they were one company. They are not. Marcuard Family Office is a separate, partner-run multi-family office that opened in Zurich in 1998. Two firms, one surname, one AI conflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Woodman Asset Management<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Woodman<\/a> started in Zug in 2010 as a multi-family office and absorbed the Lugano-based Pentagram Wealth Management in 2022. That gave it around CHF 3.5 billion, a team of 40 and offices in Zurich, Geneva, Lugano and London. FINMA regulates it, and it runs its own funds, with a tilt to credit and alternatives. Claude’s description matched, and it cited the firm’s own page about its Citywire listing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Tareno<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Tareno<\/a> dates from 2000, belongs to its partners and employs around 45 people in Basel and Zurich, with about CHF 3.5 billion under management. It holds a FINMA licence as a manager of collective assets and runs its own funds. Claude called it a repeat Citywire Top 50 member and a BILANZ winner, citing the firm’s awards page. Tareno also topped Google’s organic results in my last piece, and it sits in the upper band of my media-presence ranking<\/a>. Whatever the channel, it shows up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Forum Finance Group<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Forum Finance Group<\/a> dates from 1994, belongs to its five partners and manages around CHF 2 billion from Geneva, with a FINMA licence and an SEC registration. Claude’s description \u2014 “partner-owned, classic Geneva private-client style”, in Citywire’s Top 50 every year since 2020 \u2014 fits. Its citation, oddly, pointed to a LinkedIn post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The English answer also added four “other large, well-regarded options”: Albin Kistler, Bellecapital, WMPartners and Alpen Partners. One of those does not belong under “independent”, because Graub\u00fcndner Kantonalbank holds a majority of Albin Kistler. The same mistake as Aquila, one tier down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the SEO hat: why Claude names these independent wealth managers in Switzerland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Google ranks websites by title tags, structured data and links. Claude, it turns out, has more than one way of answering \u2014 and the language of the question picked the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In German, Claude answered from memory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The German answer cited exactly two sources, both finews.ch, both for market statistics. Not one of the five firm names came with a citation. Instead, they came from what the model already knew \u2014 and what it knows is, to a large extent, what the German-language trade press has written. Indeed, all five sit in the top ten of my ranking of independent wealth managers in Switzerland by media presence<\/a>, which counts finews.ch mentions over seventeen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take Aquila. Its “largest platform for independent wealth managers” appears in article after article, and in Claude’s answer almost word for word. A phrase repeated often enough becomes a fact; whether the fact answers the question is another matter. The Alpen Partners error shows the flip side: a hiring story weeks old got the firm named, but the same story produced a false link to a bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In English, Claude went and looked<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Asked in English, Claude searched in English. The English-language source on Swiss independents is Citywire, a London publisher whose Switzerland edition runs an annual Top 50 of independent asset managers with published criteria: a FINMA licence, independence from banks, discretionary management for private clients, open architecture. Claude took the list, picked five, and cited each one. Notably, three of the five citations went to the firms’ own websites \u2014 the pages where NS Partners, Woodman and Tareno announce their Citywire listing or their awards. In German, nothing on any firm’s website counted. In English, the awards page was the whole case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What that means for an independent wealth manager in Switzerland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Two separate games, then. For the German-speaking client, Claude names you if the trade press has written about you often and consistently \u2014 hires, board seats, deals \u2014 for years. For the English-speaking client, Claude names you if you are on the Citywire list, and you are on the Citywire list only if you apply. Firms have to submit themselves. Consequently, the quiet, partner-owned boutique that never fills in a form does not exist in either answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the answer does not tell a wealthy client<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Claude was careful in both languages. It refused to invent a ranking, said it was not a financial advisor, pointed to the FINMA register and gave better advice on Geb\u00fchren<\/a> and retrocessions than many firms do. The English answer was the better one: no bank, a stated selection basis, a source for every name, the whole country in scope. Even so, that answer merged two firms into one and put a bank-owned firm among its extras. Meanwhile the German client \u2014 the typical Swiss client \u2014 got a list that started with a bank, moved a Schwyz firm to Zurich, tied another to a bank it has no connection with, and never left the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither answer measured investment skill. Performance, fees, custody set-up and the person across the table remained invisible. Those are the tests I set out in my guide to choosing one<\/a>, and no search engine runs them for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is the uncomfortable part for the industry. Switzerland has more than 1,400 licensed wealth managers. Claude named nine across two answers, and the selection criterion was never performance. In one language it was how often the trade press writes about you; in the other, whether you applied to a London magazine’s list. For a trade built on discretion, staying out of the papers and off the lists is still a choice \u2014 just one with a new price, charged in two currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I ran both prompts on 29 October 2026 in new chats on claude.ai, using Claude Fable 5.1 with default settings, logged in from Zurich, with no further instructions. I typed the prompts exactly as shown above; note that the English one says “in Switzerland” and the German one names no location, so the language and the location cue changed together. Claude ran one web search for the German prompt and two for the English one. AI answers vary between runs, users, locations and model versions, so your five independent wealth managers in Switzerland may differ from mine. For example, an earlier run of the German prompt the same morning returned yet another list, built from BILANZ and Spear’s ratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I checked each firm against public sources on the same date: licence announcements, commercial-register data, the firms’ own sites and press reports. I excluded Aquila AG because it holds a banking licence. The figures on staff and assets come from the firms or the press; I did not verify them independently.
